Design Notebook Entry for D2

During the studio lab, you compared and combined your personas to create a set of personas that represent your target users. In this writeup, first, describe how your individual persona are the same or different, what your final set of polished personas is, and how you decided that this set of personas is comprehensive for your problem. Please note that the people you interview cannot be minor (under 19). For each final persona, include a screenshot of the revised persona and the aggregated empathy map (that you created during the studio lab) in the design notebook. Next, describe in aggregate what this set of persona tells you about your problem. What do your users need to do? What pain points do your users encouunter? What do your users want to gain? Finally, include in your writeup a revised version of the value proposition based on the understanding you gained through this persona and empathy mapping exercise.

D3: Draft Interview Questions

Using the persona and empathy maps as a guide, decide who the participants for your user interviews will be. For each target user group, write down 5 assumptions that you are making about each user group. Based on your value proposition, write down additional 5 things you might need/want to know about each target user group. Based on this brainstorming, come up with 3 high-level questions. For each high-level question, come up with at least 5 specific interview questions. In total, you should have 3 high-level questions, and 15 specific questions. Explain how you avoided "bad" questions as explained in the lecture. Finally, describe your plan of where to find users, your procedure for contacting users and interviewing them, and how many users you plan to interview each week. Document all of this in the design notebook.

T2: Team Building Exercise #1

Complete this activity from the d.school book "Creative Acts for Curious People". Individually, find or generate a photograph that represents the problem that your team is tackling and include these photos in the design notebook. Write up a summary of your collective thoughts about the project topic (250 word max) in the design notebook.

P3: Mock Interviews

Before the next studio class, you must conduct two mock interviews (per team) with two CS449 classmates who are not in your team. Write up what you learned: Which questions seemed confusing to your interviewees? Which questions were best at drawing out the most interesting information? What questions did you realize that you were missing? What recommendations did your interviewees give you on how your interview questions and procedures can be improved? Anonymize notes (i.e., DO NOT write down the interviewees' names in the design notebook. Instead use participant IDs, e.g., P1, P2, etc). In addition, based on these lessons learned, document your new / refined set of interview questions in the design notebook.
